Boilers are at the heart of the home, providing us with heat and hot water. Yet most of us forget about our boilers until they start causing us trouble.  Your car has a health check every year – the MOT and we should do the same to our boilers.

Here's a list of top reasons why you should make sure your boiler is serviced regularly.

·              Save money on repairs
Full-blown boiler problems can often develop from minor faults. An annual service will increase the chance that these are picked up on and fixed before they become a problem, saving you money and future hassle.

·              Reduce your heating costs
The engineer who undertakes your annual boiler service will make sure that it is running as efficiently as possible. This will go a long way towards making sure that you minimise your heating bills.

·              Carbon monoxide can kill
Boilers that aren't properly installed, maintained or ventilated can produce carbon monoxide. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, drowsiness, nausea, breathlessness and stomach pains. Signs are hard to spot and can be confused with tiredness or a cold. Unfortunately this silent killer can't be seen or smelt, so it really is important to make sure your boiler is serviced at least once a year.

The following symptoms indicate that your gas boiler probably needs to be serviced:

·              An irregular or yellow boiler flame

·              Stains or smoke marks appearing on or near the appliance

·              Hot water has limited flow or is less hot than it should be

·              Boiler refilling and/or overheating frequently

·              Boiler fan makes loud noises

·              The boiler pilot light goes out repeatedly

·              The pressure drops

As gas fuels your boiler it isn't burning correct, carbon monoxide is produced.  Though this can't be seen or smelt, it can cause headaches, drowsiness, nausea, breathlessness and even death.

Because of this, it's important to get your boiler serviced at least once a year. This will also help your boiler to run more efficiently, helping you save on your heating bills and can prevent costly repairs in the future.

     Do's & Don'ts

·              Run your heating regularly
Run your heating at least once a month, even in summer, to keep it running efficiently and clear the boiler pump of any grit that gathers when it's not in use.

·              Service your boiler
Do get your boiler checked once a year by a Gas Safe Registered engineer to ensure that it's running smoothly and safely.

·              Fit a detector
Do fit a carbon monoxide detector to warn you if there's a leak. If a leak occurs call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999.

·              Avoid blockages
Don't ever cover your gas boiler or block the air vents. Make sure the outside flues aren't blocked.
